I’ve found that, regardless of the number of times a person has moved, there’s one bit of advice that always pays off in saving time and cost. It involves getting rid of clutter before the move.

Think about it. If you are moving “things” that you really can live without and haven’t used in ages, why take the time or expense to pack it and move it to your new home? Instead, pitch it, sell it, or give it away before the move.

One person’s treasure is another person’s junk.

Okay, exactly what qualifies as clutter? Peter Walsh, former host of the learning Channel’s Clean Sweep show says clutter can be divided into two types: memory stuff and someday clutter (you think you might need it someday). Either way, Walsh says getting rid of clutter bring balance back into your life.

So, how do you actually get rid of the clutter?

Here’s some ideas:

  • Give your friends first dibs on things you want to get rid of. It’s surprising how many people may need and want the very things you are prepared to throw out.
  • Consider having a garage sale. While having a garage sale may sound like work itself, you can accomplish two things by having one; not only are getting rid of clutter, but you’re also making some money out of it!
  • Donate your things. Local charities like the Salvation Army or homeless shelters are always in need of things like clothes kitchen utilities and similar useful items. It feels good to know that your things are going to people who truly need them.
  • Throw out the rest. For anything that is at the end of its life cycle, you’ll just have to get rid of it. You can always do it yourself if you want to, but for larger items, you might want to consider a junk removal service.

You Move Me wants to be your partner on your next move. We will help you plan the day ahead of time, locate storage facilities, and find enough of the right size boxes. And, we’ll bring you fresh coffee that morning. There … you’re feeling less stress about that move already, right?
