You Move Me’s Insider Moving Tips
Just in time for moving season, we thought we’d share some of our ‘moving secrets’ so you can have the best move possible. Whether you’re moving a one-bedroom apartment or a four-bedroom house, read on to learn the must-have tips for your move.
- Decluttering: This always takes longer than you think. Start ridding yourself of unwanted junk at least a couple of months before your move date.
- Parking the truck: Before the day of your move, make sure you know where you’re allowed to park your truck before and after relocating. Park in a spot where the ramp can be easily set up.
- If you’re moving into a condo or apartment, remember to notify the building’s management, as you may need to reserve an elevator. Some buildings only allow moves on certain days of the week, so look into this early.
- Make sure all furniture is disassembled in advance – it always takes longer than you think!
- At the start of moving day, prep the inside and outside of the home to prevent accidents. Do you have enough door stoppers and ramps? Make sure there are clear pathways throughout the house, and up to the truck.
- If you’re moving in the summer, consider having an extra shirt to change into. Gloves are a must in winter. Comfort is key when you’re moving all day long.
- What do you want to unpack first in your new home? Remember that it will need to go on the truck last. Also, pack an overnight bag with toiletries and clothes for the next day.
- Stay fueled and hydrated. Each mover should have a water bottle and snacks on site. Bring a lunch, or plan for one person to be responsible for picking up lunch for the group.
- Work smart – not hard. Build a checklist of all the materials you will need for your move, or download a list from a reputable moving company.
- Dress your feet properly. Moving in your old running shoes may not be the best idea. Wear a pair of shoes that have good traction, not worn-down tread.
