Five tips for moving during winter

Living in the Pacific Northwest, we’re used to the cold and the rain, but we aren’t accustomed to moving in the winter.

How do you plan a move in the winter, while trying to avoid the rain, or ice? Here are some tips we have put together on how to safely and efficiently move in winter weather.

1. Consider your options

If you are moving locally, you may be tempted to do it yourself, or with the help of some friends. Depending on the weather the day of your move, there may be a number of risks involved in a “do it yourself” move. It may be in your best interest to hire a reputable moving company who is experienced in moving in all-weather situations.

2. Keep major walkways clear and ice free

Take a look at all of the major pathways that will be used to move the items, make sure they are clear, dry and, if needed, ice-free.

3. Winterize your new home

Something that may be overlooked in the chaos of moving is making sure your new home is properly prepped for winter, and moving in. You will want to make sure all paths are cleared safely for moving your items into your new home.

It will also be a good idea to make sure you have called in advance to set up all of your utilities.

Get that heater cranking so you can come to your new warm home.

4. Make sure to have your own vehicle winterized

If you choose to move yourself, you will probably be using a rented truck to move your belongings. It is still a smart idea to have your personal vehicle inspected and have all of the necessary adjustments made in case of an emergency.

Pack in your car:

  • Flashlights
  • Blankets
  • First aid kit
  • Snacks(depending on the distance of your move).

5. Think Strategically

If you are planning a do-it-yourself winter move, you will want to plan ahead. Consider moving what you can into one common area (perhaps the garage) before moving day. That way, you can load your stuff into the moving truck as efficiently as possible during breaks of winter rain.

You may also consider renting blankets. You can use them to wrap any of items you don’t want exposed to the elements.

Bonus: As a bonus we also decided to give you one tip on WHY you should make your move during winter- TIME.

Since moving companies have less business in the winter, you will have a great chance of getting the exact date and time you would like for your move.

Another perk to hiring a moving company in the winter is that moving companies will be prepared with all of the necessary winter equipment and procedures to move your items safely.
