Indianapolis – A City Transformed by Sports

You Move Me is one of the leading Indianapolis moving companies. As the capital of the state and home to over 800,000 Hoosiers, we like to think of the capital city as our own backyard.

Long associated with the Indy 500 racetrack and the Memorial weekend race, the city leaders deliberately pursued a strategy of focusing on sports as an economic stimulus some 40 years ago.

The sports-centric approach has been overwhelmingly successful.

From Monument Circle (the exact center of town) you are within one mile of an N.F.L. stadium, an N.B.A. arena and a minor league ballpark; the American College of Sports Medicine; the offices of U.S.A. Gymnastics, U.S.A. Track & Field and U.S.A. Synchronized Swimming; as well as the headquarters of the Black Coaches Association, the National Federation of State High School Associations, and the N.C.A.A.

The close proximity of all these sports-related entities is the result of a decades-long strategy, led by a succession of mayors. They initially wanted to establish the city as a crucial hub for American amateur sports. A sports commission, the first of its kind, was established with an eye to promoting sports as a way to create a more dynamic, attractive city.

The rest, as they say, is history.

The 1987 Pan American Games started the sports-centered renaissance

In 1987, when Chile could not meet its obligations, Indianapolis hosted the Pan American Games. This successful hosting set the stage for everything that followed over the next 40 years. This includes hosting the 2012 Super Bowl and seven men’s Final Fours since 1980.

Today, Indianapolis is home to two professional sports teams: the NFL Colts and the NBA Pacers. Both play in new, state of the art facilities located downtown.

All these venues have pumped revenue into the city and have particularly helped the downtown core of the city to grow. There are now 20,000 more people living in Indianapolis’ downtown core than there were 30 years ago. There’s a nightlife scene, restaurants, and hotels. The overall impact over 40 years of this strategy has definitely been positive.

If you are planning to move to the Indianapolis metro area, you can rightly be excited about living in this vibrant city. With our offices located on the Northside, You Move Me knows the Indy area well. We move hundreds of families to the city as well as great suburbs like Westfield, Fishers, Carmel, Noblesville and Zionsville.
